medcialonline-Gynaec & Infertility

Tamilnadu is geared on treating infertile men and women. Most of the people all around the world visit Tamilnadu on medical tourism. It's pleasure to contribute an article on infertility in www.medicalonline.in.

Infertility is a challe-nge a couple probab-ly never expects. Facing this problem and its treatment can be emotionally frust-rating and exhaus-ting, and can put a strain on even the best of relationships. It is natural to feel dis-couraged and confused by the problem, how-ever there are good rea-sons to be optimistic. In most instances, highly skilled professionals can find the source of the problem and pro-vide appropriate solu-tions to help overcome it.

Assisted Reproductive Technology Center (ARTC) is the inferti-lity wing of Women's Center. Women's Cen-ter has been providing comprehensive solu-tions for the entire spe-ctrum of infertility related problems over the last twe-nty years. Its staff along with its ex-tensive and dedicated infrastructure makes it the best set-up center in South India.

Assisted Reproductive Technology is an area of medicine, which has achieved enormous success and importance in the last two decades. In order to achieve success in this field, the availability of highly focu-sed and dedicated laboratory setups are essential. With the objective of setting up a center of excellence for the management of infertility, the Assisted Reproductive Technology Center was conceptualized in 1994. Prof. S. S. Ratnam and his team from National University Hospital of Sin-gapore, who started the first and most successful unit in Asia, were involved in the infrastructure pla-nning of the laboratory. The formal inauguration of the Center was in December 1994, in the presence of several national and international luminaries such as Dr. Mehroo Han-sotia from Bombay and Dr. Paul Devroy from Belgium.

The Center achieved another impor-tant milestone in 1999, with the introduction of micro-manipulation and ICSI techniques. Senior emb-ryologists from Sydney and National University Hospital, Singapore were on hand to train our embryologists. Today, our embryologists are able to achieve world-class results on their own. We reported the first blasto-cyst pregnancy in India and several other national and regional firsts. Currently, Dr Mirudhubashini Govindarajan, who is an elected member of prestigious international societies such as American Society of Reproductive Medicine and European Society for Humane Reproduction and Embryology, heads the unit. It employs scientific personnel who have received their formal training and qualification at International centers and are members of Alpha International society. Professional managers with international experience direct the Center.

We have several systems in place to maintain the quality of the labora-tory and services. In the year 2001, in the continuing quest for excellence Dr. David Mortimer, the former scientific director of Sydney IVF and presently the president and co-owner of Oozoa Biomedical Inc., was invited to provide a critical external quality assessment of the unit. Since then we have had other independent consultants certify the Center's laboratory. In 2002, the laboratory was granted India's first ISO 9001:2000 for IVF labora-tories. The Center continues to con-duct audits of its facilities to ensure that we can provide the highest possible quality of services. With this dedication, the Center continues to bring joy into the lives of nume-rous couples.

Fertility:

Male Reproductive Tract & Sperm Development:

Beginning in puberty a man's body produces millions of sperms every-day of his life. Hormones secreted by the pituitary gland at the base of his brain along with the general health, local factors, environmental factors influence the development of mature sperm.

An Egg development in the women:

A woman has her entire life's supply of eggs in her body when she is born. These immature eggs which are sto-red in the ovary, develop one at a time every month through her repro-ductive life. These eggs decrease in quality as the woman ages.

Fertilization and implantation:

The sperm needs a clear passage-way - an unobstructed fallopian tube to reach the egg. The process of fertili-zation occurs in the tube. The fertili-zed egg or embryo reaches the uterus in the next few days and embeds itself. This is called implantation. If implantation occurs in the tubes, tubal pregnancy results.

What is fertilization?

Fertilization is the process by which all human beings are created. The male sperm and female oocyte or egg merge together to create the earliest stage of human being, the zygote. This is the process by which the genetic mate-rial from both parents is passed on to the baby. This usually occurs in the fallopian tubes of the mother. The zygote thus formed moves on to the womb (uterus) four or five days later to implant and grow into a baby.
