I sincerely thanking www.medicalonline.in to take the huge step to promoting Medical Tourism in Tamilnadu and I wish to give an awareness article on Neurology.

The brain is wholly responsible for inte-lligence, capability, character wit, humor, personality and most of the characteristics that make us recogni-zable as individuals and as humans. During the 1960 and 1970's diseases of the brain and nerves began to be studied, diagnosed and treated by specialists called Neurologists. Neurology patients were for a long time considered undesirable patients in medical wards with hopeless outcomes.

A number of factors during the 1980's and 1990's have conspired to the development of neurology. CT, MRI, Ultrasound and vascular ima-ging capabilities made specific diag-nosis rather quick and safe. Complex diseases were studied and very diverse etiologies and pathophysio-logies were understood.
Newer therapies, surgeries and per-cutaneous interventions have chan-ged the face of Neurology Treat-ment. As a result most neurology patients can lead a productive life.
Stroke
Stroke causes a sudden inability to speak, move a limb, stand, walk, see, read or feel. Losing brain function can be dehumanizing and often ma-kes individuals dependent on others. When stroke patients are rushed within 6 hours to centers with specia-lized stroke unit – “Thrombolysis” is done. Dedicated stroke units pro-mote an upbeat optimistic view of stroke recovery. Treatment  within 6 hours at stroke units iv/1a thrombo-lysis have shown to decrease morta-lity, limit stroke morbidity and allow more patients to retain their indepen-dence and to return home after stroke.
Epilepsy- Seizure-Fits.
Fits can occur due to various rea-sons. Epilepsy with its unpredicta-bility, episodic nature and varied manifestations is shrouded in mysti-cism and superstition. It must be clearly understood that it is a medical condition and not be associated with supernatural powers or demoniacal possessions. Epilepsy is the commo-nest neurological problem in adoles-cence. Novel techniques of investi-gation and new forms of therapy both medical and surgical have been developed. New antiepileptic drugs with fewer side effects have helped epileptics to lead a seizure free near normal life.
Headache
Headache is one of the most common disorders seen by neurolo-gists. Migraine and Tension type headaches affect huge portions of the population, at times with severe impairment. Migraine is a signifi-cant public health problem impac-ting individual suffers their families and more broadly, society. Tension – type headache is what many people consider normal headache. Head-ache can also be due to a deep brain lesion or a problem in vision. There is emerging evidence linking head-ache to stroke. Neurological exami-nations along with neuro imaging and electro encephalography, LP and blood tests are done in the necessary cases. Many effective drugs for rapid relief and preventive medication are available to improve quality of life.
Parkinson's disease, Guillain Barre Syndrome, Dementia, cervical and lumbar disc prolapse and diseases of the spinal cord are the other common neurological diseases. With the help of newer therapies. these diseases can be managed effectively.
