After successfully completing the D.M. Neurology Examination in 1984, Dr. A.V. Srinivasan was posted in the Institute of Neurology to teach and train Post Graduate students in Psychiatry, Neuro surgery, and Physiotherapy, who are posted for Neurological Training.  He served as Asst. Professor for six years under five eminent Neurologists (Prof. G. Arjundas, Prof. K. Jagannathan, Prof. Krishnamurthy Srinivas, Prof. Z.A. Sayeed, and Prof. C. U. Velmurugandran).

Under their guidance, he received the Best NeuroPsychological Paper in The Country Award in 1990. With his paper titled “Neuro Psychological Changes in The Elderly and Its Correlation to C.T. Scan Brain,” Dr. A.V. Srinivasan became the only individual in the state to claim this award.

After completing 10 years of Asst. Professorship in Neurology, Dr. A.V.S. became the only Neurologist in the State of Tamil Nadu to be awarded the Common Wealth Medical Fellowship, in the year 1993, on Movement Disorders.  He was trained in the best Institute of the World, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square London, for one full year under Prof. C.D. Marsden (The Teacher of Teachers in the World of Neurology).

As a Common Wealth Indian Scholar, he has been awarded the “Common Wealth Study Travel Grant” to go to the U.S.A. in 1994 from Queen Square, London.  There, he attended the American Academy of Neurology meeting in 1994.  During this one year of Fellowship training in Movement Disorders (1993 – 1994), Dr. A.V. Srinivasan established himself as the only Neurologist in the State of Tamil Nadu to present a paper and also publish a paper from National Hospital Queen Square London.  Following his stint in Movement Disorders in U.K., he started in 1997, for the first time, a Movement Disorders Clinic in the Institute of Neurology and presented 10 papers thus far in the Annual Conferences.  After the retirement of Hony’ Prof. Of Neurology Prof. Zaheer Ahmed Sayeed, Dr. A.V. Srinivasan was appointed as Neuro Medical NV unit Incharge in March 1997.

Additionally, he is the only Neurologist in the state of Tamil Nadu to be elected to the August Body of Indian Academy of Neurology as an Executive Committee Member and serve for a three-year term (1996 – 1999).

In 1998 Prof.V.S.Ramachandran (Director Brain & Cognition Lab – Sandiego, (U.S.A) and Dr. A.V.S. did a collaborative work on phantom limbs and presented it in the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology at Minneapolis.  The Govt. of Tamil Nadu has helped him to start the computer center with Internet Facility for the library in the Institute of Neurology in 1998. Also in 1998, he was the Joint Organizing Secretary of the 6th Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology at Chennai.  During the years 1998-1999, he was the Coordinator for the Twelve-protocol Seminars in the Institute of Neurology and published 12 Books, honoring 12 former Professors in Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Dr. A.V. Srinivasan is redesignated as Professor from 1st November 2000 and posted as Additional Professor of Neurology in the Institute of Neurology, Madras Medical College and Government of General Hospital after working in the Neurology Department continuously for 18 years.  In 2000, he was the Joint Organizing Secretary for the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Institute of Neurology and also 49th Annual meeting of The Neurological Society of India.  Dr. Srinivasan was also the organizing secretary for the first International Epilepsy workshop in 2000.  Golden lectures book and CD – ROM on the Institute of Neurology were released during the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute of Neurology in 2000.

Dr. A.V. Srinivasan is the first Neurologist from the state of Tamil Nadu in 50 years to present two papers one in the American Academy of Neurology – Golden Jubilee year – 1998 another one in 2001 at the 53rd  Annual meeting of American Academy of Neurology.  The Association of Indian Neurologists in America in their Annual meeting on May 8th 2001 has given him an award and citation for his Scientific paper presentation (Titled:[S35.003] Intermanual Referral of Sensation and Extinction of Pain in Peripheral and Central Lesions of Somato Sensory System). He is the first Neurologist to receive this award.  Dr. A.V. Srinivasan has presented a paper on Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome in the 17th World Congress of Neurology Meeting held at London in June 2001.  The Dean of Madras Medical College has given him a commendation certificate in the College Day celebration in October 2001 for the cause of Medical Education and Health services rendered to Govt. General Hospital.

Dr. A.V. Srinivasan was the convener for the second International Movement Disorders workshop in February 2002.  Also in 2002, he was awarded Doctor o Philosophy (Ph.D) by the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University for his thesis titled “Clinical Conundrum of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome”.  The original paper on Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome published in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychiatry in 1990, is the only paper quoted as recommended reading on Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, in the Practical Neurology text book, edited by Jose Biller in 2002.

International Study Circle has given him the International Medical Excellence Award & Gold Medal in 2002 in New Delhi.  He has presented three papers in 2002 in three International Conferences.

127th  American Neurological Association meeting at New York, 2) Movement Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis at 7th  Movement Disorders Society meeting at Florida, USA and 3) Epilepsy papers at 5th European Congress on Epileptology at Madrid, Spain.

Dr. A.V. Srinivasan is the only Neurologist in our state of Tamil Nadu to have the distinction of five papers being accepted from his unit in four International Conferences in one academic year ( 2002 – 2003 ).  In May 2003, International Neurosciences bureau selected him from India to take part in the International Meet on Dementia at Seville, Spain.

He has also presented another three papers in 2003 International Conferences.

In 2003, I have been given Visiting Professorship by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.  Also in 2003, he was nominated and selected as Fellow Member of the American Academy of Neurology.

In 2004, he was nominated and selected as Fellow of the Indian Academy of Neurology.  Dr. A.V. Srinivasan is in the Board of studies as a Committee Member to start the Department of Consciousness in Madras University.  He is in the Board of studies of Super Speciality and Allied branches of medicine Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute – Deemed University.

In 2007, he was a visiting professor at HERSHEY MEDICAL SCHOOL, Pennsylvania State University. He has also been made as ADJUNCT  PROFESSOR IN THE BIOTECHNOLOGY Department  of the  INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CHENNAI.

In 2008, he was superannuated from Institute of Neurology, Madras Medical College, and was appointed as Emeritus Professor – The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in 2009.

In 2010, he was awarded U.N. Mehta Oration at Calcutta during the NeuCon 2010 meeting in Controversies in Neurology.
